Start with a small group of students

Establishing Similar Sound Awareness
This is a very lengthy process and should not be rushed.
Students should have many experiences grouping beginning sounds
(otherwise, there is nothing to pin a letter on)

Pineapple (piña)
Pear (pera)
TEACHER:: "Do they begin alike?"
STUDENT: "Sure"

Three Picture Cards:
River (río)
Sun (sol)
Robot (robot)
TEACHER:: "Which one has a different beginning sound?"
STUDENT: "This one."
  now
Deal:

Six Picture Cards:
Pear (pera)
Tiger (tigre)
Doctor (doctor)
Dentist (dentista)
Paper (papel)
Turtle (tortuga)
TEACHER:: "Which ones begin alike?"
TEACHER: "Now group them together."
(this action repeats over and over with different pictures)
